Sorting Your Solid Waste
For a complete recycling guide, please visit the IWMA website. There you can search by category or type a specific item into the search bar. If you're still unsure about what to do with an item, please contact your solid waste provider for more information.
If you currently do not have a Recycling or Green Waste service set up for your residence, please contact your solid waste service provider. For a list of haulers in our area, click here.

Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste must be disposed of at designated locations and times. There are six household hazardous waste facilities in San Luis Obispo County. All household hazardous waste facilities accept up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste materials free of charge.

Curbside Motor Oil & Filters Disposal: Residential curbside disposal of used motor oil and oil filters is offered throughout San Luis Obispo County. Contact your hauler for a FREE container and FREE curbside pick-up.
E-waste: Computers, computer monitors, printers, cell phones, telephones, televisions, and radios are household hazardous waste. For a list of drop-off locations and a complete list of items, click here.
SLO Take Back Program: Through the IWMA’s SLO Take Back Program, every retailer that sells household batteries, compact fluorescent lightbulbs & fluorescent tubes, mercury-added thermostats, paints, sharps, and medication in San Luis Obispo County must take those items back from the public for free.
Alternative Recycling Programs
Not everything can go into the recycling bins. The following items would normally be destined for the landfill, but thanks to a variety of different organizations, you can recycle them at FREE drop-off locations instead!
