Landfills, Transfer Stations, and Recycling Sites
There are three landfills in San Luis Obispo County: Cold Canyon Landfill, Chicago Grade Landfill and Paso Robles Landfill. These three landfills and along with the Santa Maria Transfer Station accept waste for disposal and recycling. North County Recycling will accept construction & demolition (C&D) waste, recycling and organics.
For more information and hours of operations, please contact each site directly:
Household Hazardous Waste
Household hazardous waste (HHW) are not allowed in the landfills and must be brought to designated locations for proper disposal. HHW includes hazardous and universal waste such as batteries, paint, poisonous and flammable materials, used oil filters, fluorescent lighting, electronic waste, aerosol and propane canisters, sharps/needles, and other materials that could pose a threat to landfill operators and the environment. There are six household hazardous waste facilities in San Luis Obispo County: one at each landfill and additional locations in Morro Bay, Nipomo and Heritage Ranch.
All household hazardous waste facilities accept up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of materials free of charge for residents.
Not sure what qualifies as HHW? Check out the IWMA Hazardous Waste Guide
