Unemployment Rate for San Luis Obispo County decreased in September 2023

The San Luis Obispo County Monthly Employment Report (September 2023) shows an increase in the civilian labor force, an increase in civilian employment, and a decrease in civilian unemployment.

 

Unemployment

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported the unemployment rate was 3.6% in September 2023, which is a decrease from the revised August 2023 rate of 3.7%. SLO County ranks as the 8th lowest Unemployment Rate in the state. The unadjusted Unemployment Rate in California is 4.9% and 3.6% in the nation during the same period.

 

Month-over Job Changes

The Government industry experienced the most job growth in this reporting period, adding 1000 jobs.  The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities and Private Education and Health Services industries each added 100 jobs during the month of September.

The Financial Activities, Manufacturing, Information, Professional and Business Services, and Other Services industries all had no change during the September reporting period.

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the largest loss with 400 jobs. The Mining, Logging, and Construction industry experienced a loss of 200 jobs during the same September reporting period.

Total Farm gained 300 jobs during the month of September.

In the September reporting period, San Luis Obispo County employers experienced a gain of 900 jobs overall.

 

Year-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the largest year-over change, gaining 1,600 jobs. The Government and Private Education and Health Services industries gained 1,000 jobs over the past year.  The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities industry experienced a year-over gain of 700 jobs.  Manufacturing experienced a year-over gain of 300 jobs. The Other Services industry experienced an increase of 100 jobs over the past year.

No year-over changes were reported in the Financial Activities industry.

The Professional and Business Services and Mining, Logging and Construction industries each lost 300 jobs since last September.  The Information industry experienced a loss of 100 jobs since this same reporting period in 2022.

Total Farm experienced a year-over gain of 200 jobs.

Overall, employers in San Luis Obispo County gained 4,200 jobs over the past year.
