Oceano Safe Parking Program to Shift to Safe Shower Program

Beginning June 1, the County of San Luis Obispo will turn its Oceano Coastal Dunes RV Park & Campground safe overnight parking program into a safe shower program to assist homeless individuals meet basic needs during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

The showers will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mavericks Campground, located within the Coastal Dunes RV Park & Campground, at 1001 Pacific Boulevard, Highway 1 in Oceano.

"Lack of access to showers increases the risk of developing diseases and can turn a relatively minor health problem into a serious illness,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “This is especially true as we face COVID-19."

Parking for showers will be limited to 30 minutes. Participants must agree to abide by site rules, including physical distancing (maintaining at least six feet from other people at the site), respectful behavior, and no drug use. Park staff will perform regular cleaning and disinfection of the shower facilities. Campground and County Rangers will monitor the sites and will be available for urgent matters.

The safe shower program will end upon the beginning of Stage 3 reopening under the State’s Resilience Roadmap.

The County began offering the safe parking program in March to provide homeless individuals and families with access to safe, clean spaces to park and sleep overnight. The safe parking program continues to operate in Los Osos and San Luis Obispo.
