Health Officials Report Two COVID-19 Deaths, Eight Residents Currently in ICU

One resident in their twenties and one in their nineties have passed away due to COVID-19

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department today reported that two SLO County residents, one in their twenties and one in their nineties, have passed away due to COVID-19. Twenty-four residents are currently in the hospital with COVID-19, including eight in the ICU¾three times as many hospitalizations as just two weeks ago.  With these deaths, 273 SLO County residents have succumbed to COVID-19.

778 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in San Luis Obispo County in the past week. 

“These losses are devastating for everyone involved and especially so when we lose a member of our community at such a young age,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to their family, friends, and loved ones. I implore our community members of all ages: protect yourself with the vaccine. We have the power to prevent these tragic losses.”

Locally, all cases sequenced in the past week were of the highly-contagious Delta variant. This finding is consistent with statewide data showing more than 90% of all strains identified were Delta in the month of July. Because this variant spreads more easily, rapidly infecting larger numbers of people, officials say it results in more people becoming severely ill.

“This is a painfully serious disease and it’s one we have the power to stop,” said Dr. Borenstein. “Our neighbors and loved ones who have died too young from this cruel disease, those who are currently receiving life support in the ICU¾right now, it’s too late for them to prevent this outcome by getting vaccinated. But for everyone else in our community, it’s not too late: you can protect yourself, protect the people you love, and help close the curtain on this terrible pandemic.”

The Public Health Department is providing incentives to residents who get vaccinated in the month of August and those who refer them.

Funcionarios de salud reportan dos muertes por COVID-19, ocho residentes en la UCI

Un residente de unos veinte años y otro de noventa han fallecido a causa del COVID-19

San Luis Obispo, CA — El Departamento de Salud Pública del Condado de San Luis Obispo informó hoy que dos residentes del Condado de SLO, uno en sus veinte años y otro en sus noventa, han fallecido debido al COVID-19. Veinticuatro residentes se encuentran actualmente en el hospital con COVID-19, incluidos ocho en la UCI, tres veces más hospitalizaciones que hace apenas dos semanas.  Con estas muertes, 273 residentes del condado de SLO han sucumbido al COVID-19.

"Estas pérdidas son devastadoras para todos los involucrados y especialmente cuando perdemos a un miembro de nuestra comunidad a una edad tan temprana", dijo la Dra. Penny Borenstein, Oficial de Salud del Condado. "Extiendo mis sentidas condolencias a sus familiares, amigos y seres queridos. Imploro a los miembros de nuestra comunidad de todas las edades: protéjase con la vacuna. Tenemos el poder de prevenir estas trágicas pérdidas".

Localmente, todos los casos secuenciados en la última semana eran del variante altamente-contagioso Delta. Este hallazgo es consistente con los datos Estatales que muestran que más del 90% de todas las cepas identificadas fueron Delta en el mes de julio. Debido a que esta variante se propaga más fácilmente, infectando rápidamente a un mayor número de personas, las autoridades dicen que resulta en que más personas se enfermen gravemente.

"Esta es una enfermedad dolorosamente seria y es una que tenemos el poder de detener", dijo la Dra. Borenstein. "Nuestros vecinos y seres queridos que han muerto demasiado jóvenes a causa de esta cruel enfermedad, aquellos que actualmente están recibiendo soporte vital en la UCI en este momento, es demasiado tarde para que prevengan este resultado vacunándose. Pero para todos los demás en nuestra comunidad, no es demasiado tarde: puede protegerse a sí mismo, proteger a las personas que ama y ayudar a cerrar el telón de esta terrible pandemia".
