The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works will begin construction of the Air Park Drive Bridge Replacement Project on June 25, 2018 and continue into early December 2018.

The bridge is located between Pier Avenue and Mendel Drive in Oceano and will be closed to all through traffic. During the bridge closure traffic will be routed around the segment of Air Park Drive between Pier Avenue and Mendel Drive.

The project will replace a decaying timber bridge built in 1940. The scope of work is as follows:

• Construct a new 2-lane concrete bridge with sidewalks on each side.

• Reconstruct the roadway 200 feet out on each side of the bridge.

• Relocate public utilities including electric, water, sewer, natural gas, and communications.

The Pier Avenue, Norswing Drive, and Mendel Drive detour route increases travel by less than a quarter-mile. Access to Pismo State Beach will not be affected.  Pier Avenue will remain open and is the direct route from Highway 1 to Pismo State Beach.

Granite Construction, Inc. has been awarded the contract for $2,278,340 to perform the work.  The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration via grant funding administered by the Caltrans Highway Bridge Program.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. on the County park side of the bridge, opposite the County campground.
