The San Luis Obispo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District (District) invites public input on its DESAL Plan – a multi-phase effort to explore the potential for a regional desalination project.
As a coastal region with the support of a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART grant, our communities have a unique opportunity to explore ocean desalination as a reliable and resilient long-term water supply to adapt to climate extremes. The District and partners have begun developing the DESAL Plan Feasibility Study and are looking for community input. Community members are encouraged to complete the short online survey—available now at slocounty.ca.gov/DesalSurvey—to share your perspectives on regional water resources, priorities, and potential solutions.
The District will be hosting a Kickoff Virtual Community Engagement Session on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. to:
- Inform the public about the DESAL Plan Feasibility Study
- Gather input about regional water resources
- Solicit perspectives on initial feasibility study elements and ocean desalination
